Alveolizzazione is the Italian term for the erosion of stone by natural elements. Typically in porous stone such as sandstone, this natural process causes cavitation to occur - alveolo meaning cavity or cell. For this artwork, CaCO3 uses several layers of cement, mortar, stucco or plaster which are hand-pierced, eroded mechanically and successively polished. Small cavities distributed on the surface create a contrasting "chiaroscuro" effect, whilst holes of different diameters, depth and inclination replicate the natural, organic surfaces of weathered historical monuments.
