Caroline Chouler-Tissier’s sculptural, concept-led practice is driven by experimentation with heat distorted, waxed recycled plastics developed during her MA Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art 2020-2022.

Chouler-Tissier further explores the aesthetics of these heated and distorted plastics through a
narrative that embraces the life changing experience of early bereavement and the rawness of grief, while her related archaeological research focuses on the ambivalence of memory and recorded history, and addresses central destabilising factors we encounter in life: the expression of tension, the processing of personal and environmental grief, and the wider influence of family and societal expectation on the discovery of self.

Marking the passage of time is an important metaphor within Chouler-Tissier’s freestanding and wall-based work, and her making exploits the dynamic, distorting properties of the materials through an intervention process, responding to the energy of each piece.

In her clay work, materials of contrasting properties are forced through ‘disruptive’ hand cut extrusion plates. Selected elements are explored, or are combined with thrown and slip cast forms using traditional and experimental techniques. Gestural markings of pigment respond to and extend the narrative.

The practice speaks of resilience and self-reflection, the commonality of human experience, and for greater connection with our landscapes as a supportive presence in life.
