Living in Savannah, Georgia, where during the summer of 2023, the heat index reached 134 degrees Fahrenheit, Caleb Zipperer often thinks about what the earth was like before human beings so widely inhabited it.

Within the form of the Wilderness Table, Zipperer captures the solitude of a prehistoric polar bear lumbering across a vast expanse of Arctic landscape. Using smooth, organic lines, Zipperer aims to capture a living, breathing creature encased in marble.

The prehistoric polar bear's journey becomes a metaphor for the human desire to bridge the chasm of time, and repair wounds to the earth that, in modern times, seem irrevocable. Zipperer wonders if his representation of the journey will be the only polar bear his children ever know to be real. Or is the polar bear's journey as timeless as the earth, and will the earth, over time, return to its natural state of wilderness?
