Fredrik Nielsen

Fredrik Nielsen (b. 1977, Linköping, Sweden) is a Stockholm-based artist whose sculptural practice has evolved through more than two decades of working with glass. While grounded in an exceptional understanding of traditional glassmaking, his work is driven less by the pursuit of technical perfection than by a continual search for spontaneity, physicality and artistic freedom.

Nielsen’s relationship with glass began through an attraction to the material itself. Before he understood its possibilities as an artistic medium, he was captivated by its heat, weight, volume and physical presence. This instinctive fascination led him to study at Orrefors Glass School, before continuing his education at Pilchuck Glass School in the United States and later the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. These formative years immersed him in the technical rigour of Scandinavian glassmaking, providing the knowledge and discipline that would underpin his later practice. His CV records his studies at Orrefors from 1998 to 2001, periods at Pilchuck between 2005 and 2009, and project programmes at the Royal Institute of Art in 2009–10 and 2013–14.

Following his studies, Nielsen worked alongside some of Sweden’s leading glassmakers while simultaneously developing an independent artistic practice. As his work evolved, he became increasingly aware that technical accomplishment alone could not sustain a personal artistic language. Rather than allowing craftsmanship to define the work, he began using it as a means of opening the process to intuition, improvisation and uncertainty.

Today, Nielsen approaches glass not simply as a material to be mastered, but as one with which to enter into dialogue. Rather than treating technical mastery as an end in itself, he uses it as the foundation and springboard from which uncertainty can emerge. His deep understanding of glass allows him to relinquish predetermined outcomes, embracing improvisation, physical risk and the unpredictable behaviour of the material as essential parts of the creative process.

Music, graffiti and popular culture have long informed Nielsen’s visual language. A recurring autobiographical motif is his own telephone number, which appears across different bodies of work, sometimes immediately legible and at other times distorted or embedded within layers of glass.

Nielsen co-founded The Garage Stockholm in 2015, establishing an independent hot-glass workshop that continues to support his own practice and that of other artists. His work has been exhibited internationally, including New Glass Now at the Corning Museum of Glass and the European Glass Context. In 2022, Mixed Emotions was selected as a finalist for the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize and exhibited at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art. His work is held in collections including Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; the Corning Museum of Glass; Musée Ariana, Geneva; and Borås Museum.
