Whilst watching the film Gilda (1946), Zipperer was struck by the way that Gilda, played by Rita Hayworth, appeared polished and gorgeous on the surface, but full of fire underneath. Zipperer wanted to capture this split personality in a sofa.
The Gilda settee merges the sensuous and elemental furniture from the 1940s with sleeker and more geometric contemporary forms with the movement of the shapes blending before your very eyes.
The challenge was to make it look seamless. Just like when Gilda’s ex-boyfriend shows up in her dressing room with her new husband, her demeanour changing from fake joie de vivre into a subtle, deep rage. “Sure, I’m decent,” she says.
The Gilda settee captures a similar storm of personality.
