Reynold Rodriguez’s work “Treesome’ explores many facets at once, sometimes fusing the aesthetic and formal with the personal and introspective to a point where he sometimes feels there is little difference between them. It is a carving made from mahogany trunks collected after Hurricane Maria; the piece explores the aspect of natural form, but also re-interpret a piece of our mindsets in the aftermath of the Hurricane. He studied the forms of the collected raw material, and attempted to infuse a sense of how the hurricane affected our lives in the long months that followed, and how lives are so often irreparably disrupted by catastrophe. The process of carving these followed a long observation of the trunks in our studios for months, until the time was right to intervene and create the most authentic form that could naturally evolve from the original piece.
