The ‘Daetdol’ series is a collection of bronze stools inspired by the daetdol, the stone steps leading up to the wooden floor (daecheong maru) of a traditional Korean house (hanok). Interpreting the functionality and symbolism of the daetdol through simplified forms, the work captures the elegance of curves and the materiality of bronze within a restrained structure. By eliminating unnecessary ornamentation and allowing only minimal curvature, the artist reduces the heaviness of the bronze while pursuing a sense of static tension and sculptural density. The result is a contemporary interpretation of the aesthetics of restraint and spatial emptiness.
