BiographyDawn Bendick began her academic pursuit at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, focusing on the Josef Albers approach to colour theory. Subsequently, she gained a Masters in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins in London.Bendick's artistic focus revolves around the manipulation of time, light, and multitone glass, grounded in a pragmatic exploration of sensory perception. Her work explores our human instinct for temporal reckoning determined by seasonal, atmospheric and meteorological shifts. Underpinning the creative work of this American born, UK based artist, is a pragmatic approach informed by in-depth research into the advancements of lighting technology and as such, its contributions to the human perception of light and colour. Bendick's work is defined by the use of transitional materials which mimic the movement of natural light, asking the viewer to question absolute time while generating a dialogue between the artificial and natural worlds. Her work has been exhibited in museums internationally including the Design Museum, Gent, Belgium, Le Tripostal, Lille, FR and Pittsburgh Glass Center, Pittsburgh, PA. Bendick's dichroic glass sculptures can be found in prominent collections including The National Museum of Norway and the ACNE Studiosprivate collection in Stockholm. Her long standing relationship with the fashion industry began in 2003 when, after coursework at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NY, NY, she worked for Calvin Klein, Prada and WGSN. The world of fashion and textiles continues to influence her work and her dichroic Time Rock Stacks debuted on the Paris mens runway of ACNE studios in 2018. Subsequently she took on a residency at Browns fashion in London in 2022 which resulted in Turn, a body of work that looked at the relationship between temporal changes in the environment and seasonal trends in fashion. The link between Dawn's artistic practice and industry is strong and in 2024 she was invited by Lutron Lighting to collaborate in their Los Angeles showroom. Bendick is dedicated to education in the arts having lectured at Delft University, NL, Parsons Design School, NY, NY and in 2025 she will be teaching a course with her long time partner Max Jacquard at Pilchuck Glass School in the U.S. Her work has been featured in publications such as DAMN, Elle Decor, The Times London, WGSN, Pantone Catalog and FRAME magazine, underscoring her impact in the spheres of art and design.
